Announcing the Winners of the Bright Before Us Contest

We're so excited to announce the winners of the Bright Before Us Writing Contest. This contest invited young writers ages 13–24 to create original work inspired by the themes, prompts, and stories in Bright Before Us, Like a Flame. We received submissions from young people all over the country that included poetry, fiction, children's books, essays, and more. A panel of Shout Mouse Press authors helped judge the submissions; guest judge José Olivarez selected the first, second, and third place winners and honorable mentions.

As José shared: "It was truly a delight to spend time with all of your stories and writing and art making. If you did not win this time, I encourage you to keep writing and keep submitting. Take it from me, I was rejected for years before I got published. Everyone's journey is their own and sometimes it can take a little bit of patience. But if you believe in yourself – and I hope you do, because you are all brilliant – I hope you will continue to write and submit."
