Mahogany Browne Brought #BlackGirlMagic to SMP Authors

Thanks to a partnership with An Open Book Foundation, the wonderful poet Mahogany Browne joined 17 young SMP writers for a workshop on August 5th. As part of our #ShoutInPlace storytelling project, we organized this event to provide an opportunity for authors to connect with an award-winning writer whose work engages with topics that arose in their submissions, such as social justice, racism, discrimination, and resilience-- to and ask any questions about writing or process and celebrate their many contributions to #ShoutInPlace.

In Solidarity with Black Lives Matter

Shout Mouse Press condemns the ongoing state-sanctioned violence towards Black people across the nation. We stand in solidarity with Black communities, racial justice advocates, and all of you who are outraged by repeated acts of racism, violence, and abuse of public trust. We support the Black Lives Matter movement and share in their mission of combating white supremacy and "creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy."

Author Talks Training at the Kennedy Center

On February 8, 2020, a group of 20+ Shout Mouse Press authors and staff gathered in Studio J at The Kennedy Center’s REACH for our first-ever Author Talks Training. Our books are written in #OwnVoices by young authors and advocates who are Latino immigrants, formerly incarcerated, Black, Muslim, and of many other identities. This was a wonderful opportunity to bring a collective of SMP authors, many of whom had never met, together.

Book Launch: I Am The Night Sky

Its official! I Am Night Sky and other reflections by muslim american youth, Shout Mouse Press’ newest antholgy featuring the stories of Muslim youth from the DMV area has launched. After a year of writing, editing, and rewriting Next Wave Muslim Innitiative’s youth authors presented their book I Am The Night Sky to an audience full of friends, family, readers, and supporters.

Announcing Our Newest Release!

We celebrated the beginning of Ramadan by announcing our newest book: I AM THE NIGHT SKY and Other Reflections by Muslim American Youth

During an era characterized by both hijabi fashion models and enduring post-9/11 stereotypes, ten Muslim American teenagers came together to explore what it means to be young and Muslim in America today. These teens represent the tremendous diversity within the American Muslim community, and their book, like them, contains multitudes.

Book Launch – Voces Sin Fronteras: Our Stories, Our Truth

It’s here! Voces Sin Fronteras: Our Stories, Our Truth, Shout Mouse’s first graphic memoir collection has officially launched. Voces Sin Fronteras, a collection of 16 bilingual side-by-side graphic memoir collections, is a product of a month-long workshop with the Latin American Youth Center’s Latino Youth Leadership council, a passionate group of young people dedicated to social justice in their community.

During the summer of 2017, Shout Mouse Press held a month-long workshop with LAYC's Latino Youth Leadership Council (LYLC), a passionate group of young people dedicated to social justice in their community. The workshop, led by a team of teaching artists with experience devising and illustrating comic books, resulted in a graphic memoir collection, titled Voces sin Fronteras: Our Stories, Our Truth.

Newbery Medal-Winning Author Launches Latest Reach / SMP Books

On November 19, 2015, Newbery Medalist Kwame Alexander will kick off the launch of the latest series of Reach Incorporated Books by Teens. We're especially excited about this because Kwame's work with his organization Book-in-a-Day is part of the inspiration for Shout Mouse Press! We can't wait for Kwame to meet his legacy authors and to celebrate the power of their words in the world.

We did it! The authors of Ballou Senior High School launched their beautiful new book into the world: Our Lives Matter. Incredible day yesterday of readings, autographs, hugs, and lots and lots of applause. Thank you to everyone who made this happen and was there to cheer on these authors! Gaithersburg Book Festival

Shout Mouse Press was thrilled to be a community partner for this year's Gaithersburg Book Festival. The Reach, Inc. teen authors who inspired the founding of SMP manned our booth, sold and signed books, gave a public reading, and met with fellow believers in the #WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign.
