Shout Mouse Press is a nonprofit writing program and publishing house that amplifies unheard voices.
Through writing workshops that lead to professional publication, we empower those from marginalized backgrounds to tell their own stories in their own voices and, as published authors, to act as leaders and agents of change.
In partnership with other nonprofits serving communities in need, we are building a catalog of mission-driven books by unheard voices. Our authors have produced original children's books, memoir and poetry collections, and novels-in-stories that expand empathy, affirm the vulnerable, and increase understanding of unheard perspectives.
Shout Mouse authors include incarcerated youth, at-risk and immigrant youth in Washington, DC, and exploited children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Learn more about who we serve and what we do. Here's why we do it:
We believe everyone has a story to tell. We believe everyone has the ability to tell it. We believe by listening to the stories we tell each other—whether true or imagined, of hopes or heartbreaks or fantasies or fears—we are learning empathy, diplomacy, reflection, and grace. We believe we need to see ourselves in the stories we are surrounded by. We believe this is especially true for those who are made to believe that their stories do not matter: the poor or the sick or the marginalized or the battered. We believe the best way to honor someone is to hear them, and we are passionate about sharing these unheard voices with the world.
